Watercolor Pencil Gerberas
This art box explores Gerbera daisies and Carnation flowers using watercolor pencils, which offer a unique way to create art by combining the properties of colored pencils and watercolors.
In lesson 1, students will learn about the history of pigments, from ancient cave paintings to modern synthetic alternatives, highlighting how advancements in technology have expanded the range of colors available to artists today. They will then learn and practice some of the fundamental watercolor pencil techniques in this unit, such as layering, blending and creating gradations.
In lessons 2 and 3, students will draw carnations and render them using gradations, depth, and texture. They will also learn how to use mathematical angles to create realistic leaves.
In lessons 4–6, students will embark on a multi-part project focused on drawing gerbera daisies. They will learn how to compose their artwork, draw realistic petals, and use watercolor pencils to create depth and dimension. The lessons emphasize observation and imagination, encouraging students to draw from both.
By the end of the lessons, students will have a good understanding of watercolor pencil techniques and be able to apply them to new artwork!
This art box includes a full set of high quality watercolor pencils as well as all of the other materials necessary to complete the unit. To top it off, we'll also learn about the biology of a flower on our blog.
